Guanaco
fiber is absolutely luscious! Not only is it the rarest and most
beautiful fiber I have seen available but is also surprisingly
easy to spin. Since most of you have not felt guanaco, I will
describe it as a downy fiber with the softness of the finest cashmeres.
But its longer length means a yarn can be twisted softer thus
producing a yarn far superior to most cashmere yarns. And of course,
it is a much more elite fiber. Guanaco fiber ranges from 14-18
microns and Peace of Yarn offers fiber of approximately 15.8 microns.

Guanacos are a member of the camelid family being most closely
related to the llama. Adult males can weigh anything from 220-330
pounds and the adult female weighs 220-270 pounds. They have a
gestation period of 345 days. The guanaco has a double coat consisting
of guard hairs that keeps moisture and debris out, and a finer
undercoat. Guanacos originate in the Andes Mountains in South
America. They are a protected species since their wonderful fiber
is often desired by poachers. Therefore, special import permits
are required that prove that the animals have not been harmed
in any way. Peace of Yarn imports this fiber from a farm where
the animals are well cared for and are not in fear for their lives.
This is not only better for the animals but better for spinners
too as the fiber reflects a good diet with its even crimp and
longer staple length than that found in wild animals.
